Watercolor and pencil on paper. 390x540 mm; 15 1/4x21 1/4 inches. Signed in ink, lower left recto. Worth (1834-1917) was one of America's most prolific 19th century illustrators and among the foremost contributors of designs for Currier and Ives published lithographs during the 1850s/60s. He mainly produced designs of trotting horses and outdoor scenes. By the late 1800s/early 1900s, his illustrations appeared regularly in Harper's Weekly and other mass-published American periodicals.
