Additional Details

Rare separately issued broadside map focusing on the political divisions of the Americas at the turn of the nineteenth century. The main map, deriving its geography from Carrington Bowles, is embellished with a decorative title cartouche showing a Native American in full dress and smoking a pipe; a table below outlines American and European possessions at the time. Adorning the left and right are panel borders consisting of ten plans and views of Mexico City, Halifax, Havana, Porto Bello, Quebec, New York (view), Kingston Jamaica, New York (map), Cartagena and St. Salvador. Thompson published his maps as an inexpensive, informative source for the consumer market of the day, and as such, very few examples of these maps survive.
