manuscript edition in original bindings. number 124 of 600 sets signed by the publisher and with an original manuscript sheet by thoreau from his journal tipped into Volume 1, in ink, with several pencil strike-outs. This leaf, mostly concerning politics, reads: "It happens to one that those things which now must engage the attention of men - as politics and the daily routine, are, it is true, vital functions of human society - best thought we unconsciously performed like the corresponding functions of the physical body." Then, struck out: "In a found state - a wise man is as unconscious of movements in the body as he is of the circulation of the blood."
