THÉOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923) CHOCOLATS / THÉS CIE. FRANÇAIS, 1895.
45x30 1/4 inches. H. Laas, Paris.
Condition A-: unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds; abrasions in image. Matted and framed.
Depicting such a simple and charming domestic scene like this was not at all difficult for Steinlen, in this case specifically, as he has depicted his wife sipping tea and his daughter drinking cocoa under the scrutiny of the family cat. The image is said to have directly influenced the art of American posterist Edward Penfield, whose 1897 Poster Calender "vividly recalled Steinlen's illustration" (Cate & Gill p. 132). Crauzat p. 135, Bargiel & Zagrodski p. 42, Maitres pl. 170 (var), DFP-II 784, Chocolate p. 42.
