THÉOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923) COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES CHOCOLATS ET DES THÈS. 1895.
31 1/2x23 inches, 80x58 1/2 cm. Courmont Frères, Paris.
Condition A-: repaired tear through lower right margin; restored loss in upper left corner; expertly restored tear through lower left margin into image. Matted and framed.
Depicting a simple and charming domestic scene like this was not at all difficult for Steinlen has depicted his wife sipping tea and his daughter drinking cocoa under the scrutiny of the family cat. The letters are all hand drawn, which although fairly typical for Steinlen, adds an even deeper level of intimacy and warmth to the image. This poster is said to have directly influenced the art of American posterist Edward Penfield, whose 1897 Poster Calender "vividly recalled Steinlen's illustration" (Cate & Gill p. 132). Crauzat p. 135, Bargiel & Zagrodski p. 41, Maitres pl. 170, DFP-II 784, Gold 55, Cate & Gill 84, Chocolate p. 42 (var), Meisterplakate 210.
