THÉOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923) LE JOURNAL / LA TRAITE DES BLANCHES. 1899.
31 1/2x23 1/4 inches, 80x59 cm. Charles Verneau, Paris.
Condition B+: minor tears, creases and foxing at edges; creases along horizontal fold; tipped to board at corners. Paper. Framed.
This is the pre-censored, smaller format of the poster which is identical to the larger except for the frame added around the image, an extension of the couch to accommodate some extra text, and most significantly the woman on the right's bare breasts remain exposed here. Steinlen was obliged by the French Prefecture of Police to go back to the printer and add a déshabillé to the scandalous nudity. Crauzat no. 503, Bargiel & Zagrodski no. 35 (variant D), Wine Spectator, pl. 111 (var), Art Nouveau p. 130.
