In 1892, Tolstoy undertook a campaign to relieve the most desperate victims of famine by visiting villages with his daughters to distribute supplies and by writing appeals for help in Russian and international newspapers. With the help of the American legation at Saint Petersburg, Tolstoy received over 11,000 rubles in 1892 from the American-Russian famine relief fund.
