Lovell (1909 - 1977) was a celebrated American artist who was driven "to the point of perfection in his documentary approach to illustration; no detail of research was too small to be verified. His settings were painted with a conviction based on many years of experience painting from nature. . . [Lovell] was a fully developed artist when he first appeared in the major national magazines in the late 1930s, and eventually worked for nearly all of them" -- Walt Reed "The Illustrator in America" (New York: The Society of Illustrators, 2001.) In keeping in spirit with the perfectionist artist, it is believed that the bridge depicted in this image was based on a wooded bridge near the artist's home in Westport, Connecticut.
