TOSHIO SAEKI
Akai Hako (The Red Box).

Portfolio with 50 color letterpress prints on Japan paper and 1 color screenprint on cloth, 1972. Each print approximately 340x520 mm; 13 3/8x20 1/2 inches (sheets), full margins. Each print signed in pencil and with the artist's ink stamp. With the original red linen portfolio. Very good impressions.

Now in his 70s, Saeki worked during his early 20s at a Tokyo advertising agency, then turned to design work at the Japanese cult men's magazine Heibon Punch, producing provocative, erotic illustrations that became very popular in Japan during the 1960s/1970s. He has often been referred to as the godfather of modern Japanese erotica. Emulating the traditional Japanese ukiyo-e style, Sakei's prints represent a contemporary, horror-erotica view on the Japanese Shunga and Yokaiga artistic traditions.
