Chartered in 1672, the Royal African Company engaged primarily in the slave trade, over which it held the English monopoly until 1698, and trafficked to a lesser extent in gold and ivory. The issues addressed in the documents reflect the Company's struggle to remain viable in the years leading up to its dissolution in 1752.
