"Your excellency, I have been informed that the Imperial Academy of Science is deciding the question of giving me a subsidy for the conductance of experiments on the resistance of air, in all probability in January. I have been waiting every day since the first of February. My sufferings are understandable, even though they are unreasonable, but unfortunately I cannot find a way to calm myself. Your excellency has not permitted that I be promised anything specific, and for that reason I am required to peacably accept the decision of the academy, whatever it may be."
