TURD Award. A gag award presented to Duke. This Technology Utilization, Research, Development (TURD) framed certificate reads in part: "On August 8 1972 at El Paso International Airport, Col. Duke capitalized on a high speed ground operation already in progress to test a unique and brilliantly conceived plexiglas drag device. The test was a partial success in that the device was demonstrated to have an extremely high drag coefficient .... shown by the device separating from the hinges." Duke's T-38 canopy accidentally opened and was torn off from the hinges. His fellow astronauts gave his award as a reminder of the event. Mounted in a 11x14 metal frame with fragments of the canopy. Astronaut office, 1972
