first edition in the original cloth. Published 9 June, 1876, the English edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the true first edition. Twain preferred that the American edition wasn't published until the novel had first appeared in England, thus securing a British copyright. Tom Sawyer was Twain's first novel written entirely by himself as well as his best-selling title. BAL 3367.
