first edition. The Polaris Expedition to the North Pole left New London in July 1871 under the command of Charles Francis Hall and by August had reached a record 82º11'N. Everything went downhill from there: Hall was murdered by the ship's doctor, the ship abandoned and the floe onto which 19 members had sought safety broke away and drifted for 6 months (with Tyson as the senior officer) before being rescued in 1873.
