First illustrated edition with full expertly executed contemporary hand-coloring throughout; quarto in eight's; title page painted in full color, featuring a trompe l'oeil veined marble slab; all head- and tail-pieces, compartments surrounding the opening verses of each book, and initials painted in bright colors, and each of the twenty full-page engravings by Bernardo Castello (1557-1629), Giacomo Franco (1556-1620), and Agostino Carracci (1557-1602) colored by hand with masterful subtlety using a pallet anchored in a dusky gray-blue background with details of each composition picked out by hand in black and gold inks, to stunning effect; title page with some worming, title mounted on heavier paper; pages of first signature with old paper reinforcements that should be reversed, one leaf with horizontal closed tear; some spotting to contents; first full-page engraving with margins extended (not supplied, wormholes in the image are consistent with those on preceding and subsequent leaves); other stains, spots and tears; bound in full 18th century sponge-decorated sheepskin, spine and boards with gilt tooling, losses to a section of the leather of the back board, binding rubbed and somewhat worn, although structurally intact, 9 x 6 1/2 in.
