The Los Angeles Advocate was founded as a monthly magazine in September 1967 and, reflecting its increasingly national ambitions, was renamed as "The Advocate" in 1970, with a biweekly production schedule. The magazine was issued as a newsprint tabloid during its early years, assuming the glossy magazine format we know today in 1985.
