The Port Hudson Morning Courier, also known merely as The Courier, began printing in January 1863, making this extra one of their earliest issues. The paper ceased publication once the town was put under siege by Union forces in late May 1863. Most of this extra concerns military news, but toward the end of the issue the following paragraph appears: "A negro challenged Col. Weeks, of a New York regiment, to a duel, and sent the challenge by a white man. Col. W. refused and resigned in disgust."<
