Additional Details

The final issue of only seven issues of a periodical which started and ended (November 11, 1842-May 10, 1843) with the Latimer case. Printed while George Latimer, a fugitive slave was being held in a Boston jail awaiting proof of ownership by James Gray of Virginia. A complex case, Latimer's hinged on the legality of holding someone who had not been charged with any specific crime. This incident resulted in the State of Massachusetts passing An Act Further to Protect Personal Property, the "Latimer Law," which essentially "prohibited state jurists and police officials from taking part in the rendition [return] of fugitive slaves." Finklelman, Slavery in the Courtroom, pp. 64-67.
