The Skin of Our Teeth.
Pen and ink drawing on tan board. 16 1/2x17 inches. Printer's marks across bottom and on verso; discoloration from mat burn. Signed bottom right. 1942.
Hirschfeld's caption across the bottom reads, "Florence Eldridge -- Frederic March Mr. & Mrs. Antrobus of Excelsior New Jersey celebrate their 500th wedding anniversary on Atlantic City's Boardwalk - 'The Skin of Our Teeth'."
"Teeth was a play produced by Mike Meyerberg. It was his first show and he assembled a cast that no other Broadway producer would even dream of casting. On the other hand, Thornton Wilder's play was not your standard Broadway drama. Part of it takes place in the Ice Age, for instance. Florence Eldridge was in it, with Freddy March, Montgomery Clift, Tallulah Bankhead , Frances Heflin, and Florence Reed. This is what later would be called a star-studded cast. Mike opened in Philadelphia where I saw it and datelined it. I persuaded Brooks Atkinson to trek down to Philadelphia to see it. Generally, Brooks' feelings about Philadelphia were in accord with W.C. Fields'." HOL/68.
