The Visit, with Lunt and Fontanne.
Pen and Ink on board, 19x29 inches. Paper tape, not affecting image, along both margins. Signed lower right Hirschfeld New Haven. 5/10/58.
"Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne were at the end of their illustrious dual career at this point but this production remains in my memory as one of their finest. For those who don't know, they were the most famous Broadway acting couple ever. I'm surprised their name didn't go into the dictionary as a verb - to lunt: to star with your wife on stage. The Durrenmatt play also is a modern classic and this was a very stylish production. All the eyes in the background is my way of suggesting the anxiety of being under intense social scrutiny." HOL/130
The Visit was the production that opened the Lunt-Fontaine theater in May 1958. It was also the last play that the Lunts did in their long career.
