Truth, Sojourner (circa 1797-1883)
Narrative of Sojourner Truth, a Northern Slave.

Boston: Printed for the author [by J.B. Yerriton and Son], 1850.

First edition, edited by Olive Gilbert; with author's portrait frontispiece; bound in publisher's original green cloth stamped and blind with gilt title to front board; somewhat worn and frayed; staining and spotting to contents; becoming decased, crease to portrait; 7 1/4 x 4 5/8 in.

"As an abolitionist and feminist, [Truth] put her body and her mind to a uinque task, that of physically representing women who had been enslaved. At a time when most Americans thought of slaves as male and women as white, Truth embodied a fact that still bears repeating: Among the Blacks are women; among the women, there are Blacks." (Quoted from Nell Irvin Painter's Sojourner Truth: A Life, A Symbol, New York: W.W. Norton, 1997.)
