Artists as prolific as Hohlwein were called upon to advertise hundreds of different products, and they would have to endlessly create new images. Depending on the product, they would call upon entire menageries of animals or special characters to help them. Hohlwein's posters for Marco Polo Tee, which feature exotic characters from around the world, have become classics of the genre. In this case, to advertise a brand of German champagne, he uses a little black servant. It was traditional in pre-war Germany for high-class establishments to employ young African boys as bellboys or waiters. DFP III 1354, Das Plakat 4, 1913, p. 110.
