UCHIDA KUICHI (1844-1875)
Portrait of Empress Consort Haruko. Albumen print, the image measuring 8x6 inches (20.3x15.2 cm.), the sheet 10 3/8x8 inches (26.4x20.3 cm.). 1872

Empress Haruko is dressed in ancient ceremonial court dress. She was the mother of Emperor Taisho and grandmother of Hirohito. The Imperial Household Agency chose Uchida, one of the most renowned photographers in Japan at the time, as the only artist permitted to photograph the Meiji Emperor in 1872 and again in 1873, and the first ever to photograph any emperor. Uchida established his reputation making portraits of samurai loyal to the ruling Tokugawa shogunate.
