Additional Details

Charles Sumner (1811-1874) was a longtime United States Senator from Massachusetts and one of the nation's leading antislavery advocates. This portrait appears to derive from a photograph credited to J.W. Black & Co. Ulke painted several portraits of Sumner according to family records. One was commissioned by the government of Haiti in 1870, in honor of Sumner's efforts to have Haiti recognized by the United States government. Another Ulke portrait of Sumner was commissioned by African-American hotel owner James Wormley in 1874.
