Additional Details

Louis Agassiz (1807-1873) was a Swiss-American naturalist who taught for many years at Harvard University. He was one of the best-known scientists of his era. The United States Capitol acquired an Agassiz portrait from Ulke in 1877; the present portrait was apparently a duplicate Ulke kept for his own collection. with--a carte-de-visite photograph of Agassiz (misidentified by a later family member in the caption), apparently used as the reference for this posthumous portrait, bearing the 1876 backstamp of the artist's brother Julius Ulke.
