The edition was never completed and very few copies of the limited edition were distributed before Ulmann's death. Most of these were donated to the Tuskegee Institute, to be sold for the benefit of that institution.

This book documented the Gullah population in South Carolina focusing primarily on their folk beliefs and religious traditions. It is one of the first examples to merge the work of a photographer and a writer.<
