Text by Julia Peterkin. Illustrated with 90 full-page, hand-pulled copper photogravures after photographs by Ulmann depicting former slaves and their descendents on the Gullah coastal region of South Carolina. Large 4to, 1/2 gilt-lettered white linen over embossed brown boards, scattered spots of foxing to the backstrip; top edge gilt; in the original slipcase, lightly worn. Roth 78; Parr/Badger I 135. one of 350 copies signed and numbered by ulmann and peterkin on the colophon, and issued with an extra photogravure plate, signed by ulmann.

The scarce deluxe edition of Ulmann's exquisitely illustrated book. Few copies of this edition had been distributed at the time of Ulmann's death in 1934. Most were donated by her heirs to the Tuskegee Institute, and were sold for the school's benefit.
