Silver print with Ulmann's signature in pencil on mount recto and partial title in pencil on mount verso, the image measuring 8 x 6 in., the mount 14 1/4 x 11 1/4 in.

Ulmann studied under Clarence White at Columbia University and later at his Clarence H. White School of Photography. In the late 1910s, she began a career as studio photographer. Her best-known work is from the mid-1920s and 1930s, during which time she traveled throughout Appalachia, documenting the traditions, culture, and people of the region.
