Additional Details

A Peace Medal was presented to each Apollo 15 crew member during a visit to New York City on 24 August 1971 by then Secretary General Thant. A card with the medal reads: "Peace Medal presented by The Secretary General of the United Nations" and is signed and inscribed by Thant: "MahaThray Sithu U Thant, 24 August 1971." During the visit the Apollo 15 crew presented the U.N. with replicas of two plaques left on the lunar surface. With a Typed Letter Signed by Mrs. James Irwin.
