VAN VORST SEWELL, ROBERT (1860-1924) "Sapientia." Oil on canvas; 43 x 21 inches. Signed on stretcher, verso. After graduating from Columbia in 1883, Robert Van Vorst Sewell went from studying at the Art Students' League in New York City to working under Lefebvre and Boulanger at the Académie Julian in Paris. He exhibited widely in America and abroad, belonged to several prominent associations, and received numerous awards. As a member of what was known as the American Renaissance Movement, he devoted his career to painting decorative murals, often employing allegorical, mythical and literary subjects. Sepientia or Wisdom was likely painted for one of his interiors. His wife (Lydia) Amanda Brewster Sewell (1859-1926) was a respected painter in her own right. Nd
