VARICK, RICHARD. Two Documents Signed, "Rich'd Varick," as Mayor of New York City. The first, to the NY State Legislature, a petition of the Mayor Aldermen and Commonalty of NY, appealing for help with meeting the rising cost of maintaining the city's alms house, enclosing a report [see second document]. Countersigned by Robert Benson. 1 1/4 pages, tall 4to, with integral blank; minor bleed-through affecting first lines of text, small holes at intersections, short closed separations at folds. The second, partly-printed, estimating the costs and condition of the alms house. 1 page, folio; backed, minor scattered chipping at edges, toning at folds and along right edge. The report: ". . . With respect to the number of paupers under our care--we have now on our books 740 . . . consisting of 404 adults, and 336 children, mostly under nine years of age.--It is remarkable, that of the above number of adults, only 96 of them were born in this City and County. . . ."
