The avant garde thrived in Czechoslovakia between the wars. Artists such as Karel Teige, Ladislav Sutnar and Ottakar Mrkvicka worked diligently on Functionalist and Constructivist designs for book covers and posters. Their work was widespread and mainstream, making the application of the progressive art of photomontage to the world of postcards unsurprising. Two of these images promote Bata, the famed Czechoslovakian shoe company, and the other two are even more prosaic - one advertising a spa town, Luhacovice, and the other, the city of Prostejov.
