VARIOUS ARTISTS MODERN ART COLLECTOR. Circa 1918.
12x9 inches. Society of Modern Art, New York.
Condition A-: some pages are torn; some pages cropped to fit binding. Several illustrations are missing. Hardbound.
Three non-consecutive bound issues of an exceptionally rare magazine, about which precious little information is available. Beautifully printed and filled with articles and images pertaining to the advertising world, it is astonishing that not one of the issues bears a date. Only an article referring to the upcoming "Third Liberty Loan," lets us date the periodical to the era of the First World War. Published by the "Society of Modern Art," an organization founded by the illustrator Winold Reiss in 1915, the magazine was started to "introduce and spread modern design and color usage in the advertising world" (http://www.winold-reiss.org/life/index.htm).
