Playwright Jack Gelber pulled from his interest in jazz music and his knowledge of "the underbelly of life" to write The Connection, a play that follows a theatrical producer and writer as they attempt to stage a play about the lives of various proficient drug users and inhabitants of the New York demimonde. The play consists of conversations between the characters as they wait around to score. It won three Obie awards in 1959-1960, including "Best New Play," "Best All-Around Production," and "Best Actor."
