Additional Details

"the most beautiful of the early american editions of this title"--Robin Smiley (in Firsts Magazine, July/August 1996. pg 50). Though the Second American appearance, it is among the scarcest and most desirable editions. The original French edition came out in 1864 followed by the first British published 6 years later in November 1871 (dated 1872). Scribner Armstrong's first American edition came out in November 1873, though dated 1874; almost a year later, after more cheaply printed editions were issued to satisfy the public demand, Scribner Armstrong produced this deluxe edition, sold by subscription only, on heavier paper stock, and in a beautiful gilt binding.
