the first fully-illustrated american edition with the rare first title-page. The first fully illustrated English-language edition was published in London by Sampson Low, Marston, Low and Searle in November 1873. In November or December 1873 Osgood published the second edition of the novel which was printed in London by Gilbert and Rivington from the plates of the British Sampson Low''s 1873 edition. The Sampson Low and Osgood editions were reprinted with title pages dated 1874. The 1873 printings are very scarce. The book "seems to have had production problems that caused the spine to crack and chip when the book was read; consequently no 1873 copies have been seen in better than good condition." - Arthur B.
