first edition. the first copy of this issue to appear at auction. OCLC locates 4 copies, including the Library of Congress example described in Myers as the only copy known. Verne's first book published in America, preceded only by periodical appearances. A title of the utmost rarity; remarkably well-preserved.

"Possibly the first Verne title to be printed in America, although 'Five Weeks in a Balloon' may still have the rights to that claim. It is probable that the story was published in their newspaper as a serial and then reprinted in a form suitable for sale on trains and at newspaper stands. This will probably rank for all time as the most rare of all Verne editions" (Myers 26); also see Arthur B. Edwards, Firsts Magazine, July/August, 1996, vol. 6, no. 7/8, pp. 40-41.
