J. L. Beddington, who was the advertising director for Shell, commissioned hundreds of posters for his company from graphic designers and painters around the world whether known or unknown. Many of the different campaigns were unusual from an advertising point of view (such as "These Men use Shell" and "British Landmarks"), but others, such as this, focussed on technical issues, such as engines and motors. Vic, who despite having designed half a dozen posters, still counts as one of the unknown artists employed by Shell, displays a mechanist image of gears turning smoothly under the flow of golden oil.
