VICTOR ÉMILE PROUVÉ (1858-1943)

46 1/2x62 1/2 inches, 118x157 1/2 cm. Jarville, Nancy.
Condition B+: expertly-repaired tear at right edge, into central image; repaired tears in margins; minor overpainting in lower right corner.

A dramatic mythological scene advertising the Brasserie Moreau & Cie., which was located in Vézelise in Northeastern France, open from 1863-1972. Prouvé depicts Hebe, the daughter of Zeus and Hera, riding Zeus's eagle to offer a mug of beer to Helios, the sun god. Fittingly, "Hebe" became a nickname for waitresses in brasseries, used mostly in Lyon. The artist may be most famous as the father of architect and designer, Jean Prouvé.
