Brauner (1903-1966) was a French Romanian painter and sculptor closely-tied to Surrealism. He studied in Bucharest early on and in the mid-1920s moved to Paris. He met and was mentored by the fellow-Romanian artist Constantin Brancusi, who also introduced him to Yves Tanguy (see lots 480 and 481). Through Tanguy, Brauner became associated with the Surrealist movement and became a copntributor to the magazine unu, an avante-garde publication which had Dadaist and Surrealist leanings. In 1934, Brauner had his first Parisian solo exhibition.
