VICTOR BRAUNER
Codex d'un Visage II.

Etching, 1963. 472x367 mm; 18 3/4x14 1/2 inches, full margins. Signed, dated and numbered 2/60 in pencil, lower margin. Published by Le Pont Cardinal, Paris. From the same-titled suite. A very good impression of this scarce etching.

Brauner (1903-1966) was a French Romanian painter and sculptor closely-tied to Surrealism. He studied in Bucharest early on and in the mid-1920s moved to Paris. He met and was mentored by the fellow-Romanian artist Constantin Brancusi, who also introduced him to Yves Tanguy. Through Tanguy, Brauner became associated with the Surrealist movement and became a contributor to the magazine unu, an avant-garde publication which had Dadaist and Surrealist leanings. In 1934, Brauner had his first Parisian solo exhibition.
