VINCENT D. SMITH (1929 - 2003)
Market.

Oil and sand with collage on linen canvas, 1967. 584x279 mm; 23x11 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower left.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; Dr. Kenneth B. Clark, New York; thence by descent, private collection, Washington, DC.

This expressive painting shows how Vincent Smith creatively depicted the civil rights struggles of African Americans in the late 1960s. The compressed composition of the narrow space between two buildings and their small windows effectively conveys the conditions of New York tenement living. In 1967, Smith began adding collage to his paintings. In Market, Smith collaged a newspaper image of men being frisked against a wall in the lower left, adding to its realism.
