VINCENT D. SMITH (1929 - 2003)
Watts.

Watercolor, pen and ink on wove paper, 1965. 254x330mm; 10x13 inches. Signed, titled and dated "7/65" in ink, lower margin.

Provenance: private New York collection.

Vicent Smith depicted many of the episodes of the Civil Rights struggle in the 1960s with fiery scenes. Despite the early July date, the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles was famously marred by riots from August 11 to August 15, 1965. The 5-day riot resulted in 34 deaths, 1,032 injuries, and 3,438 arrests. It was the most severe riot in the city's history until the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
