VINCENT SMITH (1929 - 2004)
Arthur Rimbaud's House in Harar.

Color etching, 1975. 750x559 mm; 14 3/4x22 inches, full margins. Artist's proof, aside from an unknown edition. Signed, titled and inscribed "To Dr. Clark. the people's champ - " and "A/P" in pencil, lower margin.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; Dr. Kenneth B. Clark, New York; thence by descent, private collection.

Smith's view of the house of Arthur Rimbaud, the French symbolist poet, who was a trader and gunrunner along the North African coast for the last 10 years of his short life, conveys both his Expressionist and literary interests. Another impression of this print is in the collection of David C. Driskell at the University of Maryland. Holland, p. 158.
