In 1970 Vito Acconci began a series of performances which may best be characterized as disturbing. In this work, "A naked Acconci pulled out hairs from around his navel, thereby clearing out or "opening" a space that exposed him to penetration by the viewer." This 4-part collage is reproduced in Kate Linker's monograph<> vito acconci<> (New York, 1994), p. 43.
