VITO ACCONCI
Step Piece.<>

Montage with 3 sequential images, 1970. Silver print, 230x154 mm; 8x10 inches. With Acconci's initials and date, in ink, on verso.

In 1969 performance artist Vito Acconci began recording actions of his body--bending, throwing, jumping, stepping, catching, biting--using film, video, and still photography. In "Step Piece," which was conducted during February/April/July/November 1970, he stepped on and off a foot stool in his apartment every morning at a rate of thirty steps a minute, continuing the effort for as long as possible. The results of his "daily improvement" were distributed to the art public in the form of monthly progress reports. This image is reproduced Kate Linker's definitive monograph vito acconci<> (Rizzoli, 1994), p. 25.
