Etching and aquatint on wove paper, 1972. 304x222 mm; 12x8¾ inches, wide margins. Artist's proof, aside from an unknown edition. Signed, titled and inscribed "A/P I - First State" in pencil, lower margin.

A graduate of Hunter College, and a student at the Art Students League in New York, Vivian Browne began working with Bob Blackburn in his printmaking workshop from the late 60s. She was in the vanguard of African-American artists active in organizing exhibitions of women artists in the 1970s. Her decades of teaching at Rutgers University and the Newark College of Arts and Sciences earned her the Distinguished Teacher of Studio Award from the College Arts Association in 1989.
