Additional Details

Enlarged edition of the first scientific German treatise on mine surveying, originally published in 1686 as Geometria subterranea. Through its systematic application of trigonometry, Voigtel's work represented a significant advance over earlier writings on the subject by Georg Agricola and Erasmus Reinhold. In addition to giving detailed explanations of the use of a variety of surveying instruments, the book covers decimal arithmetic, geometry, and sine tables; mining terminology; water supply systems; and the resolution of boundary disputes by the accurate plotting of surface boundaries underground. ADB XL, 212; Hoover 389 (1713 edition).
