VOR LABERTHE (DATES UNKNOWN) BIÈRES DE LA MEUSE. 1905.
52 3/4x36 1/2 inches. Imp. F. Champenois, Paris.
Condition B+: restored loss through top margin into text; vertical and horizontal folds. Framed.
One of the most famous French brands of beer, Bieres de la Meuse certainly enjoyed additional celebrity status thanks in large part to the memorable poster designed for them by Alphonse Mucha. A close look at Mucha's poster from 1896 shows this same woman, an allegory of the pure water from which the beer was brewed. The image also appears on a poster by the artist Marc Auguste Bastard (see Swann Art Nouveau Auctin #2062, lot 42). Obviously some kind of a trademark or logo, this figurine is finally given the center stage as Laberthe elegantly presents her surrounded by decorative elements that evoke hops and barley.
