The caption reads, "Evolution of the squash-blossom (hairdressing). The Moqui maidens when they have arrived at the marriageable age or are grown up and ready for 'society' are expected to wear their hair in this fashion. The mother always puts it up first and shows the daughter just how. These are the various steps in the operation."
